The Panaque schaeferi is a very large species of armored catfish; its L-number is L203. Although people often call it Schaefer’s Panaque, it also has a popular nickname: the Volkswagen Pleco. This pleco comes from the Rio San Alejandro basin in Peru. However, it is famous for one primary reason: it is a true xylivore. Specifically, this means it primarily eats wood; consequently, its entire biology is built around this diet. In addition, it grows to a massive adult size; it can easily reach 24 inches (60 cm) in length. Therefore, proper Panaque schaeferi care starts with respecting its size and diet.
How Large of a Tank Does This Pleco Need?
This is the most critical question. This pleco gets very large. Therefore, it needs a huge aquarium. A 150-gallon (approx. 500-liter) tank is the absolute minimum for one adult. The best tank mates are large, robust, and peaceful. Choose fish that can hold their own. For example, large Silver Dollars are a great choice. Peaceful, large cichlids like Uaru or Geophagus also work well. Datnoids and Silver Arowanas are also suitable companions. Always avoid small fish. The pleco will not eat them intentionally.
